These summaries are based on the First Round Proper games that Whitby Town have appeared in.
It was way back in 1969 that Whitby Town FC first appeared in the FA Cup first round. Thier opponents were York City and the game was played at Bootham Crescent. In front of a bumper crowd of 6005, Whitby lost by two goals to nil. The line up for Whitby that day was:
Neville Pybus, Eddie Myers, William Veart, Billy Theaker, Alan Williamson, Steve Myers, Alan McCloy, Bobby Veart, Dave Rutherford, Terry Bartlett, Kevin Mulgrew, . In the 68th minute Alan McCloy was replaced by Bobby Hull.
The Blues next found themselves in the First Round in 1983, when wins over Harrogate Town (4-2), Durham City (3-1), Lancaster City (2-2 then 7-3 in the replay) and 4-2 over Bishop Auckland put Whitby in the national media's spotlight with a trip to Halifax Town's, The Shay. 0-2 down by half time, saw Whitby fight back with goals from Hampton (61 min), Sills (64 min) and Phil Linacre (70 min) to put the Non League Minnows through to face Wigan Athletic in Round Two.
Team: David Coleby, Neal Granycome, Ritchie Walker, trevor Smith, Stuart Coleby, John Gollogly, Geoff Lilley, Mark Lawrence, Phil Linacre, Ronnie Sills, Derek Hampton.. No subs used.
Just a year later, and Chesterfield were the visitors to the Turnbull in the First Round and sadly for Whitby there was not repeat of the previous seasons heroics when the visitors won 1-3 and only Neal Granycome could raise a smile with the Whitby goal.

Again a year later, Whitby won through to the First Round. Having beaten Peterlee Newtown in the previous round after a replay, Whitby faced South Liverpool (now defunct). Ray Hankin's goal was enough to see the Blues through to face York City in the Second Round.
Team: David Harvey, Les Scott, Jimmy Scott, Mick Sell, Peter Johnson, Kevin March, Steve Balcombe, Gary Watson, Ray Hankin, Phil Omoni, Eddie Gray. Sub used Paul Sharkey.
Amazingly 1986 saw Doncaster Rovers draw the First Round repeaters of Whitby Town. A 2-2 draw at the Turnbull Ground saw the game go to a reply with goals from Graeme Hedley and Peter Graham.Whitby lost the replay 2-3.

There was then a huge TEN year gap before Whitby returned to Round One of the F.A. Cup. On November 16th, at the McCain Stadium Scarborough Whitby took on Hull City in a 'home' tie. The weather was appalling and it was only a puddle that seperated Whitby from another League scalp. The game ended goalless. Team: David Campbell, Alan Martin, david Logan, Kenny Goodrick, Laurie Pearson, Mitch Cook, John Borthwick, Neil Hodgson, Graham Robinson, Andy Toman, Paul Pitman. Subs Used: Mike Hall, David Goodchild, Tony Robertson.
The replay was at Boothferry Park ten days later. with just a matter of seconds on the clock, Whitby were 4-3 up with goal from Graham Robinson and a hattrick from Paul Pitman. Dwane Darby scored, and the league side were too strong for the Blues winning 4-8 on the night. The team for the replay was the same, but Mike Hall never played.
Plymouth Argyle came to the Turnbull in 2001 and brought with them the Match Of The Day cameras as the game was going to to be the extended highlights on that nights show. Whitby struck first with a goal from Alex Gildea, but the West Country side equalised. In the replay Whitby were0-3 down by half time, but a fine and strength of character performance saw then fight back and almost snatch a draw. Sadly they could only manage a 2-3 defeat.
Team: Phil Naisbett, Graham Rennison, David Logan, David Goodchild, Ben Dixon, Alex Gildea, Ian Williams, Graeme Williams, Graham Robinson, Jamie Burt, Lee Ure. Subs used: Stuart Ingram, Danny Key.
replay: Phil Naisbett, Graham Rennison, David Logan, David Goodchild, Ben Dixon, Danny Key, Graham Robinson, Graeme Williams, Alex Gildea, Jamie Burt, Lee Ure. Subs Used: Roy Allen, Alan Anderson,
In 2003 Whitby faced Hartlepool United in Round One and crashed to the league side 0-4. Team: Adam Clementson, Mark Obern, Graeme Williams, Adam Reed, Anthony Hall, Ben Dixon, Brian Linighan, Graham Robinson, Anthony Ormerod, Gary Browne, Craig Veart. Including replays, we have managed 11 appearances in the FA Cup. Not bad for a small seaside town side. How long before our next giddy trip to Round One? or threatening to 'giant kill' in Round Two. Or if the gods being with us a super visit to a top Premiership side in Round Three? Who knows, all I know is Whitby Town have a fine F.A. Cup history and long may it continue.
